'One of the many stories of personal tragedy in the hyperinflation that struck Germany in the early 1920s is of a retired conductor of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra who withdrew his life savings from the bank, bought a subway ticket with the money (all it would buy), road once around his beloved city, went home, and put a bullet through his head.'
It struck me as depressingly tragic. This is merely a product of my imagination, but I saw a picture of a man disillusioned, disappointed, but resigned.
I'm becomming a classical geek, but this is my favourite symphonic movement at the moment. I love the opening of the strings!
