...ABOUT

Love Purple!

I Sit And Look Out
Walt Whitman.

I sit and look out upon all the sorrows of the world, and upon all oppression and shame;
I hear secret convulsive sobs from young men, at anguish with themselves, remorseful after deeds done;
I see, in low life, the mother misused by her children, dying, neglected, gaunt, desperate;
I see the wife misused by her husband--I see the treacherous seducer of young women;
I mark the ranklings of jealousy and unrequited love, attempted to be hid--I see these sights on the earth;
I see the workings of battle, pestilence, tyranny--I see martyrs and prisoners;
I observe a famine at sea--I observe the sailors casting lots who shall be kill'd, to preserve the lives of the rest;
I observe the slights and degradations cast by arrogant persons upon laborers, the poor, and upon negroes, and the like;
All these--All the meanness and agony without end, I sitting, look out upon,
See, hear, and am silent.

      Me and my CCF in Beijing Day 3

      Transport is such a bitch in a foreign land.

      Transport Woes 1: Going home from work

      I was told to take bus 976 by the hotel, and I should be able to see the hotel once I get off the bus. I got off, perhaps at the wrong stop (they are all shuang jing something, north, west, east) walked forever, and just couldn't find the hotel. I thus hopped into the cab, and tried to tell the cab driver that the name of the hotel was 'si ji gong yu' and I passed by guang hua bridge in the morning, so it might be near there.' As he drove to guang hua bridge, he accused me of giving him two addresses. Well, my bad, maybe. They were at two completely different places.

      When we FINALLY reached the hotel, the driver told me it was 'shi ji gong yu'. le sigh! 'si ji gong yu' vs 'shi ji gong yu' really makes a difference huh!

      The moment I walked in, I asked the hotel staff if there was a bus 976 nearby, and said no.

      Transport Woe 2: Getting to Work

      This morning, I deliberately left early. I asked the hotel reception (a different one this time) if there was a bus 976 nearby, and the reply was yes, and I was given directions. True enough, I found the bus 976. I got horrible confused though, because there was 976 on the sign, and yet the bus stop was beneath a flyover, and I kept seeing 976 passing above me, over the flyover! After waiting forever, and seeing that the road was so congested anyway, I decided to walk.

      I reached the China world trade centre, and saw jian guo road and jian guo bridge. I decided to try my luck and followed jian guo road, and arrived at Soho East. Soho is my workplace, but I also knew there are two Soho's, so I thought it was smart of me to go ask the guard at Soho East where was the other Soho, since people around the streets always seem confused when I ask them where is Soho. He told me to walk further up to Soho West. A rather long walk later, I found Soho West. The architecture was familiar enough, but the district didn't look that familiar to my office.

      I asked again. And discovered, there is another, another Soho two subway stations down. A long walk later, I hopped into the subway, and finally got to my office!

      SIGH. Did I mention bus 976, wherever it actually goes to, ends at 8pm? That's barely enough time for me to practise piano after work. I am going to try walking again tonight. I think I should be able to make it back after a 40 min walk. The traffic is nuts. And the bus signs are messing my brain. Might as well let the carbon monoxide from the air mess my brain while I exercise.

      Can't wait for lunch. Get to practise piano. I should just go now. I have NO WORK to do.
