I Sit And Look Out
Walt Whitman.

I sit and look out upon all the sorrows of the world, and upon all oppression and shame;
I hear secret convulsive sobs from young men, at anguish with themselves, remorseful after deeds done;
I see, in low life, the mother misused by her children, dying, neglected, gaunt, desperate;
I see the wife misused by her husband--I see the treacherous seducer of young women;

Today is very exciting in California...Mr. Kempf in recital in Ventura, CA. I have a great ticket and will be hearing him in person for the first time. Incredibly, he seldom plays in the U.S.A.

The program is Bach, Rachmaninov and Chopin.

The past three days Mr. Kempf has performed the Liszt Piano Concerto in Orange County here. The reviews were amazingly divided. The non-Romantic critic for the L.A. Times hated his interpretation and playing, while several others were thrilled and transported.

I am transported mostly by his Chopin. I am hoping for an encore tonight of Opus 25 No. 12 but we will see.
